Corgis are taking over the world, shaking their furry little behinds and winning the hearts of dog lovers everywhere. Enjoy these fun facts about these intelligent dogs.  Now you’ll know all about Corgis, besides of course, how cute they are, because you already knew that!

 

1. Some Pembroke Corgis are Born Without Tails.

Most Corgis however are born with a tail.  The tail is docked by a Veterinarian when the puppies are 1-3 days old, however some Corgis carry what is known as the Bob-Tail gene and in that case, they are indeed born without a tail!

 

 

2. They’re Great Watchdogs

Many find the Corgi a great watchdog because of their attentive nature and slumber-shattering woof.

 

3. Corgi Means ‘Dwarf Dog’

Their name comes from the Welsh language. Cor is for “dwarf” and Gi means dog, so every time we speak the name of this breed we’re really saying “Dwarf Dog.”

4. Corgis Have a Double Coat

These dogs know how to winterize and accessorize. Corgis have a double coat of hair, enabling them have weather protection but also lose a layer in the warmer seasons. The softer undercoat sheds twice a year in a fall and spring blowout.

 

5. They Come in Lots of Colors

Most people think of one or two color schemes when it comes to a corgi, but they actually vary quite a bit. Colors include sable, tri-colored, red, and fawn with or without white markings.

 

6. They’ve Got Low-Maintenance Hair (sort of)

Corgis’ fluffy short hair does not require cutting or professional grooming but you do need to brush them at least weekly to keep it looking it's best.

 

7. They Share Ancestry with Huskies (and other Spitz type dogs) 

They may not look like it at first glance, but breed historians contend the Corgi descends from the Spitz family of dogs. This dog family is characterized by small pointed ears, pointed muzzle, thick fur, and a bushy tail (although the Corgi tail is docked).  The Corgi is a dwarfed version, likely related to the Swedish Valhund or Norwegian Buhund.

8. Vikings Loved Them

The Pembroke Corgis come from Pembrokeshire, Wales and is believed the Vikings originally brought them with them when they came from Scandinavia and settled in Wales. Corgis have a time-tested history amidst tough, hardworking human companions and they’ve historically earned their keep.

9. Corgis are Very Intelligent

Corgis are pretty sharp. The Corgi may just be the Sherlock Holmes of the dog world: brilliant and genteel, with energy and ego to match. Corgis make world-class herding dogs. If you can keep up, this one’s for you!

10. Corgis were the Queen of England's Favorite Dog

According to royal confidantes, the Queen prefered Corgis to other dog breeds because of their energy and untamed spirit. Queen Elizabeth owned Corgis for over 70 years. Talk about a royal dog!
